Best Canberra Bakery - Silo

Silo is a Canberra Bakery well worth a visit

Ok, so I can’t unequivocally claim that this is THE best Canberra bakery, as I haven’t really tried that many, but it is really a truly awesome Canberra bakery. Trust me. I’ve eaten more than my fair share of bread over the years.

My work often takes me to visit Canberra and Sydney, and no work trip to Canberra is complete without lunch from Silo Bakery in Kingston.

Silo has all the usual bakery suspects: loaves of sourdough, baguettes, tarts, pastries etc. But this is no ordinary bakery. These treats are executed with such technical prowess that I doubt it is possible to find a selection of more perfect baked good anywhere.

The sourdough has a perfectly chewy crust and a tang that tells you there is a well-tended starter lurking somewhere in the kitchen. The baguettes are perfectly crisp, leaving you with the requisite apron of crumbs over your chest after tucking in. On each visit I have to force myself to choose something other than the delicious ham and cheese baguette, made with freshly carved leg ham and a slice or two of heaven from the cheeseroom.

The display of tarts is impossible to go past – I always end up pressed up against the glass case like a drooling idiot. Lemon, rhubarb, chocolate, pecan, peach – everything that is good, sweet and wonderful in the world is immortalised in a buttery case of perfect pastry.

The only thing lacking in this place is the service, which I have found to be terse and even a little rude. But call me a sellout, for baked good like that I am willing to overlook stern waiting staff every time.
